» Founders Message

Like a fingerprint, each spinal cord injury (SCI) and the corresponding needs of both the individual and family are unique. The HeadNorth Foundation is dedicated to providing comprehensive personalized assistance to SCI survivors and their families in the greater San Diego area. And we do it with integrity, compassion and respect.

It is our aim to become a nationally recognized, primary source of guidance and resources to survivors of spinal cord injuries. Our ever-expanding web site and network of trained professionals and resources are focused on meeting the transitional needs of SCI survivors, from recovery to rehabilitation to reintegration into an active lifestyle. To that end, we have developed programs that address the specific needs of those impacted by SCI and its subsequent transitions.

Spinal cord injuries are generally sudden and unexpected. In an instant, lives are forever changed. We are inspired by the many individuals who are changing what it means to live with a spinal cord injury and are redefining what is possible.

Thank you for your support, Eric A. Northbrook, Founder

» History

On January 27, 2006 – in a fraction of a second – Eric Northbrook was thrown from his motorcycle, severing his spinal cord at the T7 vertebra which resulted in paralysis from the chest down. Eric’s spinal cord and other internal injuries were so severe that it is a miracle he survived the accident. From the moment of the crash, Eric made a choice to fight for his life. His unrelenting spirit remains steadfast and following months of grueling recovery and rehabilitation, they are encouraged by the prospect of a fulfilling and active life.

Eric Northbrook is an outstanding father, a loving husband, a caring individual, a consummate professional and an outdoor enthusiast. Eric has made a renewed commitment to embrace and enjoy life with his wife Denise and their children, Justin and Sydney, including actively partaking in such activities as golf, fishing, snow skiing, and other family outdoor adventures in general. While Eric’s accident was sudden and unexpected, he still has a strong desire to continue to be an inspiration and to make a difference in the world. Eric defies conventional wisdom by sincerely believing that "nothing is impossible" and he has vowed to overcome this challenge.

Just one month after his accident, in the midst of his own recovery and rehabilitation, Eric established the HeadNorth Foundation to provide the essential support and guidance to individuals and families affected by a spinal cord injury. While Eric was still in hospital, HeadNorth’s first recipient was 24-year-old Matthew Clinton, a fellow patient, who was afflicted with a rare spontaneous spinal cord stroke that left him a ventilator-dependent quadriplegic. A $15,000 gift enabled Matt to purchase adaptive tools essential for his mobility. HeadNorth also champions a cure for paralysis by supporting advanced research and treatments.
